One of the most common and familiar hair problems is hair loss. Hair loss or alopecia areata, is a common condition characterized by the shedding of hair and the inability to grow them back again.
Alopecia is a disease wherein your immune system attacks the hair follicles, which is where the hair grows.
Excessive hair loss is found in both genders and knows no age or race. Sometimes, the damage done to the hair follicles can be reversed using different methods and techniques.
What Happens To Patients With Alopecia Areata?
Patients with alopecia areata wll experience excessive hair falling out, ultimately leacing them with a smooth, hairless patches on their heads. In extreme cases, the hair loss would be so extensive that they would only be left with no hair at all.
Why We Experience Hair Loss or Alopecia?
Hair loss can be attributed to many things. One of the major reasons for hair loss in males is a hormone called DHT or Dihydrotestosterone. DHT is only found in males and is a primary androgen in the prostate, which, when bound with testosterone, could shrink hair follicles and making it impossible for hair to grow back. This is the reason why males are more prone to baldness.
Meanwhile, alopecia itself may be triggered by genetics or a family history of that condition, allergies and other autoimmune diseases.
How To Treat Hair Loss
Although each case of baldness may be different, some doctors might recommend taking health supplements to address the problem. These health supplements will give improved vitamins and minerals to the body. As always, taking the natural approach to address this problem will almost always assure you that there will be no side effects, as compared to other brand of treatment.
Other ways to fight hair loss and baldness include hair re-growth treatment, medicinal shampoo and conditioner. These techniques might work better with females.
On the other hand, the more intensive approach to hair fall may be too costly for many people. This would include some surgery such as a hair transplant.
Meanwhile, most people who suffer from excessive hair loss or alopecia resort to wearing hair pieces that are made from 100% human hair. These hair pieces are often implanted into a nylon net, which the patient may wear. They can also be attached to the scalp using a special glue.
For people who only have minor hair problems and have a few bald patches on their scalp, there are many different hairstyles to choose from in order to hide the patches. You can also wear head bands and clips to keep hair into place, hiding the bald patches from plain sight.
On the other hand, people who have bald patches may also go for corticosteroids injections every 4 to 6 weeks. Usually, these injections are applied about 1cm apart on the bald areas of the scalp.
Corticosteroid injections may also be used in complement with Minoxidil (Rogaine) as well as the psolaren with ultraviolet A light therapy.
How To Prevent Hair Fall & Baldness
Maintaining proper nutrition is very important in this case, since good nutrition almost always translates to healthy hair follicles. In certain cases after the completion of treatment, the problem may recur after a certain period of time. In such cases, going for herbal treatments might be a good idea. Fruits and vegetable intake has to be increased in order to have healthy hair.
Meanwhile, although there are now a lot of products promising hair regrowth, there are still a lot to learn when it comes to curing baldness. However, if baldness runs in your family, you will have a higher risk of developing it later on in life.
Eating foods that are rich in Vitamin B, Iron, Zinc and Calcium help you have healthier hair and scalp, decreasing your chances of developing alopecia. Also, food that are rich in protein such as meat, beans and dairy are also excellent ways to prevent hair loss.
If alopecia runs in your family, you may also think twice about using hair products that contain too many chemicals. It’s also best to stay away from heat styling, hair rebonding, hair coloring and hair bleaching, which could cause your hair to become brittle and may change the structure of your scalp.
Hair loss can be prevented but it can only be treated 10% in most cases, reason why you should take good care of your hair and scalp.
